2011 Cow Elk Hunt

Opening morning was cold but we all put on our orange and headed out on snowmobiles to track down the elk. We passed lots of trucks stuck on the side of the road because there was too much snow. I was glad I had on 6 layers of clothing because I stayed nice and warm except for my hands and feet, but they always get cold. There were 8 of us with tags Landon, Tanner, Alex, Morgan, Guy, Willy and I; Gary also had a tag but he couldn't come because he had a funeral to go to.

We drove around the roads a while seeing a few small herds of elk that were a little to far away but then we saw a huge herd... we fired some shots but didn't get anything and to the side of us was another small herd trying to sneak past... we shot and Guy(Dad) got one. Willy and I followed the small group... we hiked down off the hill but couldn't find them so we hiked back up to the snowmobile (I HATE HIKING!!!). Later we saw one running up a draw... Willy shot and stopped her, then I shot and killed her. Landon came to help and said he had shot her in the jaw, Willy had shot her in the back and I had shot her in the neck. I tagged her and I was glad to be done so I could just have fun riding around without having to pack a gun. In the afternoon Alex shot one almost 500 yards away on a hillside that was a pain to get to. By the time we got his out everyone was ready to go home. It was a fun and exciting day. We got 3 elk that day and the guys went out 2 more days, but didn't get anymore.

This is Willy's new toy that we took elk hunging, and now he already wants to sell it... sigh.

2011 Muzzleloader Deer Season

Willy stayed up at Rock Creek with David and Morgan for the first few days of the hunt. They saw a few bucks but didn't get them. He came home and we have gone up as a family a few times. This year hasn't been strictly hunting and driving around as in past years. We drove up to Rock Creek a couple times, but we have also gone fishing and went after wood one day while we were waiting for sundown so the deer would come out. But Willy didn't get his deer up in the mountains. Wednesday night just before the hunt ended he went down to hunt by Alex's house... they saw some bucks but didn't shoot them so they headed down to a David Evan's house... he has always been so good to our guys and let them hunt on his place... that is where Willy shot a 2point. He had a good time hunting and got his deer... and this year is nice because he took his deer to McKinnon's, so I don't even have to cut up deer this year, but I am sure there will be some elk to cut up later. I am a little sad that we didn't get to go with Willy to see him get his deer and we didn't get any pictures... hopefully next year we can.

My Mighty Hunter

Willy bought a Rifle Elk tag this year.

He was so excited to try the cow elk hunt.

At first he couldn't decide whether he wanted to
take the camper down to Anthro and camp
or just to drive down.

He finally decided to drive and
take the Jeep and four-wheeler.

This looks like a lot of elk for one person,
but only one is ours.


There were 7 guys who had tags.

4 out of 7 got their elk so far.

I am glad Willy got his,
so he can stick around for the rest of December.


The kids had fun helping Dad skin and take
care of the elk.

This is kind of gross,
so I hope it doesn't make anyone sick.


What mighty hunters!

Now that the fun is over the work begins.
We have to cut and package all that meat.

BEAR!!!

Of course I forgot to take the camera

every time we went hunting with Willy.

So I didn't get any pictures of Willy
shooting his big buck,
and we already have it skinned
and in the freezer.

Wyatt spotted a bear!

I have lived here my whole life,
and we have gone hunting pretty much
every year
and I have never seen a bear up there.

Willy, Wyatt, and Morgan drove up
Yellowstone,
and on the way up the mountain toward Dry Gulch
Wyatt spotted a bear about 20 yards from the jeep.

Willy shot his deer Monday night
as we were driving up Hales Canyon.

There were probably 5 does and one spike.

The deer ran up the hill and Willy shot him in the back.
The deer fell down the hill right to the jeep.

We love going hunting with Willy.
It is the best time of year to drive up there
with all the leaves changing colors.

Moon Lake...Moose

Sunday we went for a family drive to Moon Lake.

It is getting close to deer season
and Willy wanted to see if we could find some deer
so he would know where he wanted to hunt.

We didn't see many deer,
but we saw a cow and her calf
eating away by the frog ponds.

The kids were so excited
to look as they passed the binoculars
back and forth,
so they could each get a good look.

We need to get them their own pair of binoculars
so we don't have any arguments.

2010 Turkey Hunt

Willy bought a turkey tag,

went hunting with Alex
and shot his first turkey opening morning.

Willy loves to hunt and doesn't think
he gets to go often enough.

He had a hard time deciding whether to go this year,
but when he came home with his first turkey
he was absolutely thrilled
and glad he had decided to get a tag.

Deer Season

We went for a drive 2 weekends ago to look for deer, because the big deer hunt is coming up in a couple of days and we saw the most beautiful rainbow. We don't see them very often, but when we do it is so breathtaking. The kids had a fun time especially when we saw a porcupine, I took some pictures but it was so far away that it looked like a rock in the picture, but it was a big one. And we saw a good size buck, but he was on Indian land... I hope travels a little north for Willy. Speaking of Willy, he almost forgot that he had to work today because of all the time off he has had and he gets a few more days off this week for the hunt. I really hope he has fun and I hope that the kids and I can go up and stay with him when Wyatt gets out of school.
